Who embodies the Voice of Reason? Cleante, Elmire’s brother functions in a way as a voice of reason. He tried to balance Tartuffe’s position and his religious fervor, but are his arguments persuasive or effective?  Why does Orgon transfer all his power, money and authority to Tartuffe? How does Tartuffe persuade him to do so?  What role does religious fanaticism play in Orgon’s life and in the play as a whole? Pay close attention to 1.5.22-28.  What is the critique of marriage that the play offers? What is the role of the various female characters? Think particularly about how Elmire and Dorine navigate their positions and about Marianne.  Finally, think about the ending. The King intervenes in a Dues Ex Machina moment, to save Orgon and the family from Tartuffe’s predation.
