Can you help me study? hey there this is my sociology assignment. Instructions: assignment is to propose a sociological research question and then to propose what theoretical perspective and methodology you would use to study it. The question should be driven by your interests and inspired by our readings and/or discussions of a particular sociological issue. Your proposal should make a case for a) why this question is of interest or significance to sociologists, and b) how you will use a particular theory and a particular method (as described in the text and expanded on in class) to research the question. Note that research proposals normally require a more thorough literature review than is required for this assignment, i.e., the researcher shows how his proposed research contributes to existing types of knowledge about the subject matter. For this particular assignment, you are being asked to find and cite one academic source from outside of class. HINT: “follow the trail” of sociological knowledge by looking for a relevant article referenced in the class textbook. Be careful! Do not pose a question that is already mostly answered in the text; do not pose a question that is too big or abstract to be tackled in one research project; and do not pose a question that cannot be (at least partially) answered through evidence-based research. Your assignment should be about 400 to 500 words in length. This assignment will be worth 20% of your total class grade. Unformatted Attachment Preview Soc 100 Fall 2020 R. Willey Sex, Souls, and Social Advancement: An Analysis of Sexual Abstinence and Social Advancement in a Canadian Church Sexual abstinence has gained a considerable following in the United States and, to a lesser degree, Canada, particularly within Evangelical Christianity (Warner 2008). Intro and This growth of the abstinence movement corresponds to the concurrent rise of “Hook” abstinence related cultural phenomena, such as the ascension of abstaining celebrities, such as the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus (Bozek 2008). Abstinence receives this attention despite the fact that 80% of Canadian teens approve of sex before marriage (Bibby 2001: 89). Therefore, it is difficult to understand the value that abstinence has for those who commit to it. If abstinence is not the norm in society, Why then a sub-cultural space must exist within society where abstinence has value. This and What project looks into one of those spaces. As such, this study asks: how does an Evangelical young adult’s status as a “virgin” effect their position within and outside the church community? This project will use a qualitative research methodology. I will conduct participant observation, “which entails both observing people as an outsider would and actively participating in the various activities of the studied people’s lives” (Steckley and Letts 2010: 38). I will complete this observation by attending functions and meetings for young How: method adults, aged 18 to 24, at a local Evangelical church. My decision to focus on young adults is two-fold. First, it helps me avoid the ethical quandaries of researching youth (individuals under the age of 18), and second, it give me a chance to observe young people who are more actively thinking about courtship and marriage. I will use Pierre Bourdieu’s work on habitus and reproduction to inform my How: theoretical understanding of abstinence and social advancement (Steckley and Letts theory 2010: 109). Through this lens, one can begin to see the effects of religious education, knowledge, and social connections on one’s position within a particular religious community. In particular, how the possession of one’s “virginity” helps to reproduce and naturalize certain social hierarchies, such as gender, race, and class, both with and outside the church community. By understanding how individuals reproduce these Reiterate why hierarchies through the practice of abstinence, researchers can begin to see how a subcultural space can develop where this practice has value.
