[SOLUTION] Role of Government and American Expectations

QUESTION: To what extent has each era in U.S. history transformed the role of government and American expectations about government? Provide an answer and explain your reasons for supporting that answer.  Begin your essay with the transition from the Early National period and Gilded Age, through Progressivism (November 25 Is the last reading for this era). EVIDENCE: Use only HIS 101  class material and readings for this assignment.  Do not conduct outside research. ACADEMIC HONESTY: Although you may converse with your classmates on general ideas regarding your essay, this is an individual or group assignment, and all work (e.g. selecting and organizing evidence and writing) should only be done by you or your group.  Do not rely on other groups or classmates and do not copy text published in books or on the internet (plagiarism—a serious academic offense). STEPS: 1. Reflect on the assignment.  Think of your essay as consisting of three sections.  Each section should analyze one of the three transitions between the time periods that designated in the charts.  If it helps, you can think of each section as a “compare and contrast” analysis of the two time periods in that transition. TRANSITIONS TO COVER: A) Early National Period  1770s-1850s B) Gilded Age C) Progressivism 2. Complete your time-period summary charts for each era.  Fill in evidence and ideas that you did not have time to do in class.  You will need lots of specific evidence from course sources ( specific details) and general statements that explain the evidence. 3. Then use the time-period summary charts to fill in the two-page final overview chart. 4. Use the overview chart to figure out your thesis.  Make sure that your thesis directly answers the question and provides your “reasons why” behind that thesis.  Because you will be addressing three transitions, your thesis in this essay should be relatively long—five sentences.  By writing one sentence per transition, you will have space to summarize your main reasons for why you see (or don’t see) a major transition between each set of two time periods.  Because your essay’s thesis statement will be long, it is important that you do not waste space earlier in the introduction.  Get to your main ideas quickly. 5. Outline your essay. Here are two possible ways to organize: •Introduction: State thesis: yes/no and your reasons why—for each of thetransitions. •A1. Evidence that doesn’t prove your thesis for this part of the essay; explain why not a. Evidence for one of the categories b. Evidence for another category c. etc. Note: When you begin A1, restate (using different words) the part of your thesis that deals with the Early National Period to the Gilded Age transition. •A2. Evidence that does support your thesis and explain why. a. Evidence for one category b. Evidence for another category c. etc. •B1 and B2.  Same as above for A1 and A2. Note: When you begin B2, restate (using different words) the part of your thesis that deals with the Gilded Age to Progressive  transition.  Also make sure to provide a brief bridge to smooth the switch in topics from A to B. •Conclusion: Restate your thesis and your reason why you think so (a general reason). A second, and maybe even a better way to organize: •Introduction: State thesis: yes/no and your reasons why—for each of the transitions. •A1. Your main idea for Category 1 in the Early National Period/Gilded Age transition i. Evidence that doesn’t show your side, if there is any ii. Evidence that shows your side Note: When you begin A1, restate (using different words) the part of your thesis that deals with the Early National Period/Gilded Age transition.  … •A2. Your main idea for Category 2 for the Early National Era/Gilded Age transition •A3 to A6. Repeat for the other categories in the Early National Era/Gilded Age  transition •B1. Your main idea for Category 1 in the Early National Era/Gilded Age transition Note: When you begin B2, restate (using different words) the part of your thesis that deals with the Gilded Age to Progressive era.  Also make sure to provide a brief bridge to smooth the switch in topics from A to B. •B2. Your main idea for Category 2 for the Gilded Age to Progressive era transition •B3 to B6. Repeat for the other categories in the Gilded Age to Progressive era  transition •Conclusion: Restate your thesis and your reason why you think so (a general reason). 6. Use comparative words: “unlike,” “in contrast to,” “similarly,” “however,” etc. 7. Check citations: Please follow the guidelines on citations provided for the first essay. 8. Edit, proofread, and revise -Review the writing guide provided in the syllabus. -Reread your thesis, your TSA’s, and conclusion to make sure they all follow from one to the next. -Use a spell checker. -Eliminate wasted words: This is a group essay. My part is on the Gilded Age. Please write an essay on the Gilded Era and please use the chart attched thank you
