Early in the course, you will beintroduced with core mixed methods designs and data collection in mixed methods research, sothat you can start designing your study early in the semester. You will be requested to submitthe synopsis of your research project, submit IRB application (if applicable), instrument for datacollection (if applicable) so that you can get early feedback on your research project.You can use different data sources for your mixed methods research project. These are:a. Secondary data: If you want to use secondary data that includes both qualitative andquantitative data, you can use the dataset for this project. If you decide to take thioption, you will not be required to go through the IRB approval process and developinstrument for data collection for this project.b. Primary data: If you prefer to collect primary data for this project, you have to startyour research project early in the semester. In order to submit application for IRBapproval, you need to decide on your research question early and prepare yourinstruments for data collection as early as possible, that is, within the first two weeks ofthe semester. Here are the two recommended viable options if you decide to useprimary data for your research project.I. Option 1: If your project uses primary data, you can save a lot of time if youconducta follow-up study based on the research project you have conductedfor Qualitative Research course last year. Based on your qualitative results, youcan design a quantitative data collection instrument (e.g. survey) using Qualtricsor other online data collection platforms [Qualtrics instructions are available onBlackboard, Week 1 folder]. As an OLLU student, you have access to Qualtrics,and you can log in using your OLLU credentials. Depending on the design youhave selected, you may or may not have to collect the data from the same studyparticipants and the number of participants in your qualitative and quantitativedata may not be equal to those participated in your qualitative research. Forexample, if you select Exploratory Sequential Design, for the quantitative followupphase you can use a large sample (mostly, over 30 participants but yousample size depends on your quantitative data analysis technique) ofindividuals who did not previously participate in thequalitative phase. You canuse the themes, codes, and quotes from your qualitative data to designquantitative data instrument (e.g. themes become variables) or the taxonomy(e.g. different groups). Make sure to include demographic and socioeconomicvariables in your survey if you are interested to collect primary data.II. Option 2: If you are interested in comparing the two results (qualitative andquantitative data) with the intent of obtaining a more complete understanding ofthe problem, to validate one set of findings with the other or determine ifparticipants respond in a similar way when they check quantitative31predetermined scales and when asked open ended qualitative questions,Convergent design would be the most appropriate mixed methods design. If thisis your choice, you can design a survey which includes both close endedquantitative and qualitative questions and administer the survey questionnaireto a large sample (mostly, over 30 participants but your sample size depends onyour quantitative data analysis technique). You can design your survey usingQualtrics or other online data collection platforms.Manuscript GuidelinesThe goal of this research project is to help you to prepare a mixed methods journalarticle for publication. Therefore, it is required to select a target journal article early in thesemester, so that you can prepare the manuscript following the guidelines the targetjournal. Generally, your manuscript should include abstract, introduction with relatedliterature, methods (study sample, measurement for both qualitative and quantitativemeasures, and analytic strategy), results (including sample characteristics and summaryof qualitative and quantitative sample), and discussion. All formatting guidelines, pagelimits, or any other instruction regarding your research project should follow theguidelines of the target journal.
