[SOLUTION] Reduction of Waste in the South African Construction Industry
Research title: What are the barriers and opportunities for the reduction of waste in the South African construction industry? Overall Aim: The aim of the dissertation is to explore / investigate the barriers and opportunities to reduce the waste generated on construction projects in South Africa. Subsidiary Objectives : 1. Examine if the principles of green engineering are used in the South African construction industry. Green Engineering is when part of the Consultants design criteria is to design the project in such a manner that waste is minimized during construction. 2. Investigate what type of materials are currently re-used in the and if there are opportunities of increasing re-use to reduce waste? 3. Investigate and recommend steps to create awareness of waste recycling opportunities especially under the smaller tier companies. The rationale of this research paper is to investigate the barriers and opportunities for the reduction of waste from construction projects that are send to landfill sites. This is critically important as the practice of dumping waste on landfill sites results in numerous problems such as: – Transport of construction waste to the landfill site will increase overall cost as well as increase the carbon footprint of the project. – The more waste that are send to a landfill site means that a bigger area is required for the landfill site. Landfill sites are an uneconomical use of land. – Cost of maintenance of landfill sites increases as the size of the landfill site becomes bigger. – Waste causes soil contamination, air and water pollution and increases the overall carbon emissions of a country. Reduction of waste will have economic benefits i.e. less material required for a project and contribute to a more sustainable construction industry. Please provide a Literature review on the above topic and subsidiary objectives.
