[SOLUTION] Proposal and Working Thesis

Description: This assignment will serve as a basic rationale for the first draft of essay 1. It also engages the concepts discussed in the essay 1 assignment and in the powerpoint, “key elements of an academic essay.” Make sure you’ve read/listened to these things before you start the assignment.  Paragraph by Paragraph Instructions:  ·         Your first major essay is going to be a rhetorical analysis of a specific character; either you will be analyzing the rhetoric of Victor, or you will be analyzing the rhetoric of the creature. In the first paragraph of this proposal, you need to clarify which character’s rhetoric you will be focusing on, and also explain why you have chosen this focus. What is it about the character and/or the way he uses rhetoric that you find compelling?  ·         The second paragraph should be devoted to explaining what you think your character’s argument is. Every speaker who uses rhetoric is trying to convince their listener of something, after all. What is your speaker trying to convince your reader of? Also, what is the speaker’s motivation? o    Remember that you can choose to define the scope of your analysis. You may want to analyze the whole arc of Victor’s rhetoric from beginning to end, with an argument about what he’s building up to. Conversely, you may want to focus on a more limited strain of his reasoning. Perhaps you are interested in his rhetoric on family, on science, on love, in defense of himself, etc… How you define the scope of your project is up to you, as long as you are specific and focused in your discussion.  o    Another thing that is important to remember as you write your second paragraph is that rhetoric is not always 100% honest. Sometimes it IS honest and fair, but sometimes it may be that a speaker is using rhetoric to deceive the audience in some way. You should address this in your second paragraph. What is your speaker up to? Is he being honest and fair? If so, in what ways? Is he being dishonest in some ways? If so, how? You may also want to point to tensions in the speaker’s rhetoric, where he is partially honest, but also incorporates some dishonesty as well. This can help you create a rounder, more nuanced portrait of the rhetoric you are analyzing, as well as the character using that rhetoric.  ·         The third paragraph should be used to describe more about the rhetoric that your character uses. In this paragraph, you should characterize the kind of rhetoric that the speaker uses.  Point to the terms that you learned in the two powerpoint presentations on rhetoric last week. You may want to refresh your memory by referring back to the slides as you work on completing this paragraph. This paragraph should be focused on characterizing the kinds of rhetoric your speaker uses the most, as the most predominant features. But you should also try to explain a little about the effectiveness of these modes. After you name the modes of rhetoric the speaker uses, you should also explain how you see them as effective in making his case, or perhaps at times also ineffective. Assess his rhetorical choices.  ·         After you’ve written the third paragraph, you should also include a working thesis for your essay. This does NOT have to be the final thesis that you wind up with, but it will get you going in a specific direction, which is important. If you don’t remember what a working thesis is, don’t forget to review the presentation key elements of an academic essay, or the page explaining the first essay assignment. Your thesis should be at least three sentences, should include an explanation of your analysis. Here is an example (I’ll use Walton as my example, since he’s not allowed and will not get in the way of you making up your own argument) “Robert Walton’s rhetoric suggests that he is a man with little emotional aptitude for human connection. He focuses only on his mission and never on the actual quality of his relationship with his sister. By employing only logos and never pathos, Walton actually makes himself more vulnerable than if he’d simply discussed his own feelings, as most humans would in such dire circumstances”. This is actually not a great thesis, I just made it up on the spot, but you can see how it works. You need a focus, a characterization of your project, and it needs to be focused on how your chosen character (either Victor or the creature) uses his argument.  Nuts and Bolts:  EACH of the three paragraphs should be at least 200 words in length, for a total of 600 words. In addition to this requirement for the first three paragraphs, your thesis should be at least thee sentences in length.
