This is a very common type of visual communication that artist have been for centuries that can be understood as a type of universal language. Here are the definitions of the two terms: Metaphor: an image that is descriptive of something else A metaphor is a very broad term that can encompass many ideas and can be closely associated with a literary figure of speech. For instance, in literature, you might understand metaphor as that is a phrase that is not to be taken literally. For instance, “All the world’s a stage” is a metaphor that was written by William Shakespeare. For the visual arts, metaphors are used as a visual clue that compares an idea/experience/emotion and represents it as an object/process/material. For example, to represent the brevity of life, an artist might use the subject such as a flower that eventually wither over time.  Symbol: an image that stands for or represents a cultural entity or concept  The main difference between a symbol and a metaphor (although they are very similar) is that a symbol is generally culturally determined and is identifiable by a large group of people. They tend to be more specific and concrete, with little room for interpretation. You often encounter symbolism in religious, mythological and political artworks. For instance, if a white dove is represented in a work of art, then it more than likely represents peace. Iconography is the study of these symbols. Icon and symbol are interchangeable terminology, although typically an icon has religious or political connotations.  After reading the materials listed above, watch the video about The Arnolfini Portrait and describe the symbols that are used by Van Eyck and what they represent. Write about how you think these symbols have changed over time and what they might represent today. Also, considering the use of those symbols, what can we as viewers learn about the cultural values with regards to the representation of this partnership of husband and wife. What did they value in the 17th century in the Netherlands as far as to matrimony and expectations for men and women where concerned? Are those values different today? Next, write about where we encounter symbols and how we use symbolism in our daily lives. How has technology impacted they way we use and interpret symbolism and its presence in modern society.
