Native Americans originally settled it. William Penn granted charter for Pennsylvania colony established the city. The community continually grew into a large city after independence. It is known for first organized protest against slavery in 1688, home for first US bank and US Mint, and the US constitution (History.com Editors., 2019, March 08). During World War I, Philadelphia was center for a Spanish Flu pandemic, and more than 5000 citizens contracted the disease. After WWII, there was a decrease in industrialization, and many people lost their jobs, creating poverty and racial tensions. Immigrants and Millinneals arriving in the city are sources of rejuvenation (PEW, 2019, April 11). At the heart of the City of Philadelphia is Delaware River and Schuylkill River as the most critical topographical features. The climate of Philadelphia comprises of moderate temperatures and weather patterns due to the topography and elevation of the region than other areas in PA. The city has a true winter season, and temperatures in January are 33 degrees F. The annual precipitation in the region is 41 inches, and the foliage remains nourished. Climate change is a significant aspect of the Philadelphia community, causing implications on the water systems. The climatic changes are increasing temperature and high risk of storms. The community is focusing on established measures to reduce the threat of climate change. The Philadelphia water department (PWD) is responsible for providing stormwater, wastewater, and integrated water services, improving sanitation. There are significant variations in sanitation from the rich to poor neighborhoods. Air pollution is the most critical challenge in Philadelphia. However, the level of pollution has declined. The air quality index is worse than in the US. The index is 2020 is 98.5, compared to 74.2 in the US (City-Data.Com., 2020).
