The requirement for this essay is: Reflection paper of learning and observations including what you learned about coaching and about yourself as a learner, coach, and leader. (Peer paper attached as example) Learner: I am a Social (interpersonal) Learner Learning in groups and working with others is favored by social learners. These students know how to communicate effectively and enjoy collaborating with others, brainstorming and discussing ideas and concepts. Visual (spatial) Learner Visual learners are those who prefer learning by observing things. Using pictures, images, diagrams, whiteboards and more helps these types of learners understand information better. Coach: I’m always learning how to be a better listener If you listen with your third ear, then you dont filter what you hear with supposition, stereotypes, judgment, what someone else said, and bitterness. You dont let past experiences with someone limit your ability to truly empathize with someone elses life load. Third-ear listening also means engaging and connecting with another human being on an emotional level. Always working towards level 4 listening: Level 4: Acting generatively This is when you listen beyond the words and feelings. It is when you forge a connection with the person in such a deep way you become generative with your hearing adding more, much more than what is being said. You are helping the other person experience hearing themselves. You will need to let go of your self-awareness to be this present with the other. This is a story told by David Hanlon and Jill Rigney that does a great job of illustrating generative listening: Leader: Leaders who use a coaching style open their hearts and doors for people. They believe that everyone has power within themselves. A coaching leader gives people a little direction to help them tap into their ability to achieve all that they’re capable of. Transformational leadership is always “transforming” and improving upon the company’s conventions. Employees might have a basic set of tasks and goals that they complete every week or month, but the leader is constantly pushing them outside of their comfort zone. Servant Leadership Servant leaders operate with this standard motto: Serve first and lead second. Rather than thinking about how they can inspire people to follow their lead, they channel the majority of their energy into finding ways that they can help others. They prioritize the needs of other people above their own. Despite the fact that theyre natural leaders, those who follow the servant leadership model dont try to maintain a white-knuckle grasp on their own status or power. Instead, they focus on elevating and developing the people who follow them.
