Nursing best practices are critical to healthcare excellence.
Nurses with a bachelor’s degree in nursing can combine their evidence-based education with best practices in healthcare.
The research-based curriculum incorporates research, science, clinical experience, and expert viewpoints.
These lectures give nurses the skills they need to succeed in the tough and ever-changing healthcare field.
Nurses must employ best practices in their regular activities.
In these three domains, the following are some instances of nursing best practices:
Shift change from nurse to nurse.
Infection prevention is important.
Treatment and release of patients.
Nurse-to-Nurse Shift Change Best Practice
The word “shift change” can be interchanged with any of the following in a therapeutic setting:
Handoff.
Handover.
Sign-out.
Cross-coverage.
Report on the shift.
Communication is the most critical aspect of nursing best practices, especially during shift changes.
Nurses record and transfer crucial patient information during shift changes, and it is critical that the information be correct and full.
During a nurse-to-nurse shift change, there is a higher risk of patient care errors.
Because of the complexity of specialized health systems, there are issues.
Incomplete handoffs can lead to gaps in patient care, including improper prescriptions, operation errors, and even death.
Because of a breakdown in communication and the deletion of critical patient information on sign-out forms, improper handoffs occur.
The patient’s treatment is not interrupted during a successful handoff.
Handoff protocols have been established by regulatory authorities such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, The Joint Commission, and the National Quality Forum.
There should be no omissions in the details of a patient’s care, such as drug regimens or therapies, and the new attending nurse should be aware of any patient limits or physical demands.
There should be full staff coverage during a shift change so that nurses are not distracted.
The submission of accurate and up-to-date patient documentation, as well as the opportunity to ask questions, should be included in the shift change handoff.
The on-duty nurse should read the patient information back to the end-of-shift nurse to double-check it.
Evidence-Based Infection Control Nursing Best Practices
Hospital patients develop infections at a rate of 4.5 out of 1,000, according to a report in Critical Care Nurse.
A patient who contracts an infection faces a protracted stay in the hospital, significant sickness, or death.
Bacterial transmission in hospitals can result in infections at the surgery site, the urinary tract, and other locations.
Bacteria can potentially induce bloodstream infections in central catheters.
The predominance of multidrug-resistant organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant enterococcus, and gram-negative bacilli is one of the major causes of infection.
Infection prevention guidelines are provided by the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals, the World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
These standard care procedures are part of the evidence-based approach for preventing illness spread:
Hand hygiene is really important.
Protection against the elements.
Decontamination.
Antibiotic stewardship is the management of antibiotics.
Hand hygiene should be performed after every interaction with a patient, as well as when entering and exiting the patient’s room.
Gloves, gowns, masks, and goggles are examples of barrier protection.
In order to reduce and prevent the transmission of infection, the room and equipment must be decontaminated.
Antibiotic stewardship is essential for preventing antibiotic misuse.
Antibiotics should only be administered as a last resort if all other options have failed, and the treatment should be closely monitored.
Patients with an active infection may need to be segregated in extreme circumstances.
Improve Patient Satisfaction with Care Rounding and Care Calls
Best practices for patient care follow-up and discharge training are being implemented in hospitals.
The implementation of care rounding reduces the requirement for the patient’s call light.
Patients typically press the call button to alert nurses that they require immediate assistance.
Patients are more accessible to nurses who implement a care-rounding program.
The number of times patients utilize the call light to summon a nurse for a non-emergency reason is reduced as a result of this approach.
When patients are ready to be discharged, they are frequently agitated and unable to remember a nurse’s medicine or home care instructions.
Nurses use care calls to follow in on discharged patients and address any issues they may have.
A nurse will usually contact a patient 48 to 72 hours after they have been discharged.
Patients’ satisfaction with their healthcare experience improves as a result of care calls that strengthen relationships between nurses and patients.
As part of their best practices, several hospitals include both care rounds and care calls.
Nurses can speed up the discharge process by incorporating technology.
They can send patients the following goods and upload instructions on their phone or computer:
Links to health-related websites.
Information on insurance.
