Maples-Keller and colleagues described virtual reality as one of the technological solutions that allow users to experience the interactions and actions of a controlled computer-generated setting (103). While VR devices and concepts are popular in the entertainment sector, its valuable contributions to the treatment of a variety of mental health problems including the development of research-based evidence for improvement initiative are largely unrecognized. In the opinion of Zeng et al., the greatest value of this innovative technological solution is the administration of exposure-based therapy that requires the replay of the environment and experiences that adversely impact the patient (42). Depression is a chronic mental disorder that impairs the ability of the patient to sleep, eat, and have positive moods that hinder social interactions. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the anxiety disorders that occur through the exposure of a person to repeated traumatic incidents and is characterized by symptoms including avoidance, negative alterations, intrusion, and negative moods that have several impacts (McEwen et al. 1854). A detailed review of the literature is essential for gaining insights into the aspects of virtual reality-based exposure therapy that are effective for the treatment of depression and PTSD in different categories of patients. Depression Bouchard et al. wrote that an estimated 16.1million adult in the United States reported at least an episode depression in 2015 alone, which is a figure that represents 6.7% of the entire population of adult Americans. They further noted that this is a severe mental disorder that results in loss of interests or pleasure in the employment or educational activities, loss of energy and concentration, feeling of worthlessness, and increased potential for suicide (280). Freeman et al. noted that the severity of depression or depressive disorder is evident in its relation with other mental conditions including anxiety disorders. The scholars argued that their conduct of the review of several empirical studies revealed that an adult that experiences depression must have a history of anxiety as a child and would display clinical symptoms that are similar to this condition (2395). In spite of the effectiveness of the treatment protocols for depression and mental disorders with other incidence and prevalence rate in the country, a significant percentage of patients that require solutions that eliminate the underlying causes of the condition in them. According to Gebara and his colleagues, the use of medication, exercise, and cognitive-based therapy are not just effective for the treatment of depression but present opportunities for the introduction of innovative solutions in the management of the condition (25). It is the premise that is driving the interest of several practitioners in the integration of technology into the administration of these protocols. Cisler et al. corroborated this assertion when he argued that the source of the interest of practitioners and patient in the use of emerging health technology in the treatment of some mental conditions can be found in the success recorded in rehabilitation medicine (818). The positive effect on the management of Parkinson’s disease and developmental disabilities and autism has increased the clamor for the use of VR-based exposure therapy for the treatment of depression. Therefore, the goal of this research paper is to examine the features of VR technology that can be used for the treatment and potential risk factors that could arise from this application. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) The increasing likelihood of human and natural incidents to occur in the United States is considered one of the leading factors for the high prevalence rate of PTSD in the country due to their impact on the mental health of the victims and survivors. Also, the involvement of the U.S military in the Middle East is considered an additional factor for the high prevalence of PTSD among the adult population thereby increasing the demand for effective treatment for the condition. According to McLay et al., PTSD is one of the mental conditions with co-occurring problems including impaired neuropsychological functioning and depression thereby making it a challenging condition to treat for practitioners (442). Meanwhile, the goal of the treatment plan for PTSD should be structured to target the symptoms that include intrusion, negative alterations in mood, avoidance, and increased irritability, as well as reactivity. Also, the need to achieve increased levels of the positive outcomes of the therapy is an important consideration for the selection of the treatment protocols for PTSD since the display of the symptoms vary from patient to patient and should influence the structure of the therapy. In the empirical review of the clinical approaches for the effective management of PTSD, Maples-Keller et al. stated the potential for the patient to relive the experience during the performance of daily activities is a major consideration for the clamor for reality-based therapy such as VR-based exposure (110). They further argued that the challenges with the administration of the treatment approaches when patients are uncooperative can be eliminated when the goal is to improve their neuropsychological functions in the long-term perspective. Virtual Reality-Based Therapy for Depression and PTSD Zeng et al. stated VR-based exposure therapy is designed to follow certain treatment paths that are beyond the simulation of the exposure to the reality that is responsible for the conditions. They claimed that psychoeducation, psychosocial history, and the rationale for exposure are the fundamental elements that are considered in the initial three sessions that are used for the administration of the therapy (42). An additional aspect of the VRET that is important for consideration in its application to the treatment plan for depression and PTSD is the use of relaxation and coping strategies that play significant roles in the cognitive capabilities of the patient. Therefore, the objectives of the foundational stage of the VRET plan are the establishment of the progress towards the elimination of the symptoms. Assignment: Way to Treat Mental and Emotional Conditions According to McCann et al., the understanding of the dynamics of the patients for the implementation of the imaginal exposures for the patients that are suffering from PTSD and depression should be structured in ways that stimulate the specific feared stimuli to optimize the benefits. In the opinion of these scholars, the potential of VRET to help this category of mental health patients is based on the capacity to reconstruct and manipulate the exposures, control the dose, and design the exposure environment to meet the requirement of the initial environment that resulted in the depressive mood and trauma (628). Meanwhile, the outcome of the empirical studies conducted by Bouchard et al. on the use of virtual reality-based treatment for PTSD patients due to vehicle crash showed that high-level satisfaction with the positive effect of the treatment on most of their symptoms including fear and avoidance (277). In the case of depressive mood disorder, the review of the literature showed that the treatment can result in the long-term elimination of the associated factors including those related to loss of sleep, concentrations, and appetite, as well as the co-occurring conditions that exacerbate the emotional and physical status of the patient. Furthermore, the review of the literature on the limitations of the administration of virtual reality-based exposure therapy revealed disadvantages that are only related to cost and not the impact of the technique or procedure. According to McCann et al., the improved technological solutions for virtual reality and the interest of several manufacturers in the production of the devices for setup in the clinical setting has resulted in the reduction that is making it possible for their adoption (629). Also, the limited potential for errors during the administration of the techniques and the ease of use is a dimension of the findings from the literature that showed that this treatment approach is one of the critical methods that would be used for the resolution. Conclusion In conclusion, the review of the literature showed that virtual reality-based therapy remains one of the most viable tools for helping patients and practitioners to overcome the challenges that are associated with the administration of alternative procedures. One of the findings from current and past studies on the relevance and effectiveness of this technology-based treatment protocol is that role of the controlled simulation of the stimuli in the elimination of the environment-based symptoms associated with PTSD and depression. Similarly, the link between conditions is an aspect of the potential of this treatment to be the preferred technique for reducing the prevalence and incidence of these mental and emotional problems in the United States. In spite of the past limitations to the implementation of the technology in the clinical environment, it remains an important topic for future research endeavors into the effective treatment of most of the factors that are related.
