See the question on attachment assignment_2_details.pdf Assignment 2: Literature Review and Critique of Method Students are required to write a 1000 word literature review examining 3-4 sources that will be utilised in the Research Essay. This assignment is due on Friday 5 May. Students are also required to provide an annotated bibliography of a further 6-8 sources, including at least 2 primary sources. Word limit: 1,000 words Value: 35% Details of task: There are 2 parts to this assignment. Part 1 is the literature review. Part 2 is the annotated bibliography. The literature review is designed to enable you to demonstrate that you have located your key sources and have read them closely. It involves writing a detailed 1000-word literature review on three to four sources you will utilize in your Research Essay. It also requires you to include an annotated bibliography of six to eight additional texts, divided into primary and secondary sources. Part 1: The literature review and critique of method The review should clearly indicate that you have identified an accessible, relevant and appropriate body of literature for your research. For instance, if your topic involves some potential archival research, it is important that you demonstrate knowledge of where such materials are held and that you can be confident of gaining access to them. At this stage, you might not be able to identify all individual documents housed within such archives or other sources of primary materials, however, it is important for you to demonstrate a close reading of at least some sources and to indicate that you know of the existence and accessibility of a range of other appropriate materials. In writing the review you should discuss how these sources will support your main argument and help develop key paragraphs within your research essay. You might also briefly consider the language, context, bias, intention and viewpoints of each source and think about the reliability of these materials. You will not be able to comprehensively assess these problems within a 1,000-word review, but you might flag some of the issues for discussion in the major research essay. The literature review also provides you with an opportunity to discuss any problems relating to your evidence and the direction of your project. You might find that it is difficult to locate sources on one of the themes you hoped to address, or you might learn that there is too much data on your subject and your topic has become unmanageable. Alternatively, you might realize that the source material contradicts the hypothesis or central argument that you hoped to present in the research essay. If you have encountered any of these difficulties you should explain how the research essay has been revised to account for these issues, or briefly detail potential revisions for discussion with the course coordinator. As noted above your essay should only refer to sources which are publicly accessible, that is, material that is held in libraries or public archives, or is available on the World Wide Web. Part 2: The annotated bibliography: Assignment: Literature Review and Critique of Method This annotated bibliography should not be a highly detailed analysis, but should provide a brief one or two sentence summary outlining how each source relates to your chosen topic. The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to show that you have identified an additional six to eight additional texts that will be of use for your research project, and that you have acquainted yourself with the information they contain. You are not expected to show a detailed understanding of these. These sources should be comprised of a mix of primary and secondary sources. The following outline is a suggestion of how you could develop your review. 1. Introduction Introduce your field and place your three/four books in it. Briefly comment on the authors’ background and previous research. Remember to provide a footnote with the full reference for each of the books/articles. 2. Summary of thesis Comment on the book’s central argument. Give a brief summary of the book/article’s content to explain how the main argument or thesis is developed. In this section you will be discussing the book’s design and structure. Although this section will probably be a significant part of your review, avoid simply listing the contents of the various chapters. You should also briefly discuss the book/article’s contribution to scholarship. How does it respond to other historical/political perspectives? Does it revise or build on older interpretations? How original is the argument? It is not necessary for you to compare your work with a wide body of works in the field, however you might consider the similarities and differences of this text to the other books and articles you review for this essay. 3. Evaluation Briefly evaluate the book, commenting on its strengths and weaknesses. You might refer to the context in which the book or article was written and the author’s perspective on his or her subject matter. You could also comment on the writing style and, where relevant, whether photographs, maps and figures assist in the development of the thesis. You could also refer to the material the author utilises in support of his or her argument and consider whether their argument is based on extensive use of primary sources. This section should occupy the main part of the literature review. 4. Conclusion Discuss and compare the overall value of the books, commenting on how they will support your main argument. Note In order to avoid confusion you could discuss the books collectively in the introduction and conclusion. Discuss each book separately in the other sections. The outline plan of your book review should look something like the following: 1. Introduction 2. Book one a) Summary b) evaluation 3. Book two a) Summary b) evaluation 4. Book three a) Summary b) Evaluation 5. Book four a) Summary b) evaluation 6.
