Tobacco use has been a significant issue in society for several decades due to the harmful effects that it causes to the users. It has contributed to a large number of deaths among people of all ages. Besides, it kills bother the users and non-users, especially when used through smoking. When tobacco products such as cigarettes are used through smoking, the smoke affects the passive person more than the smoker (CDC, n.d.). This is because the passive person inhales smoke from the cigarette burning end and the one that the smoker exhales. Therefore, tobacco use needs to be addressed through tobacco use cessation. There are different methods through which tobacco is used in the community, where some of the means include smoking, chewing, hookah, and vaping e-cigarettes (Dutra & Glantz, 2017). However, among these methods, smoking is considered the most harmful since it contributes to the development of health issues to both the smoker and the passerby who inhales the passive smoke. Most of these individuals use tobacco either through smoking or chewing. According to the information obtained from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in every ten people who smoke tobacco, nine of them start the behavior at 18 years. However, 99% of smokers start behavior at the age of 26 years (CDC, n.d.). The CDC indicates that approximately 1,600 youths smoke tobacco in the U.S. each day. Besides, at least 200 youth start smoking tobacco daily (CDC, n.d.). This indicates that tobacco use among youths is high, and therefore it needs to be addressed. Though individuals with an age of below 21 years are not allowed to purchase tobacco products in the U.S., these individuals usually send their friends who are above the age or buy from the sellers who do not care about their age. Reasons why Adolescents are predisposed to Tobacco Use There are several factors that predispose the youths to tobacco use. One of these factors is peer pressure. The majority of the youths start using tobacco through chewing or smoking by the influence of their friends who use the product. Research indicates that there is a high likelihood of an individual to start smoking if some of his or her friends smoke (Glasser et al., 2017). Peer pressure has been considered to be the most significant influence on smoking among youths. The second aspect that predisposes youths to tobacco use is gender. Boys are more likely to start using tobacco compared to girls. This is because they are considered to be exposed to tobacco use situations compared to girls. For example, it is more likely to find a group of boys smoking compared to girls. In most cases, girls start using tobacco when under stress or when they have lost hope in life. However, boys mostly use products for fun. The youths can significantly benefit from tobacco use cessation due to the health issue they are likely to develop due to tobacco use behavior. Most of the tobacco users use the product during their youth stage (CDC, n.d.). Therefore, addressing tobacco use during this stage can significantly reduce the behavior among adults. Besides, when an individual starts smoking during the youth stage, he or she will end up smoking for a long period until when elderly. However, before attaining the elderly age, an individual may have developed several chronic diseases that may contribute to his or her death. Some of the conditions that one may develop are lung diseases, heart disease, oral cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and diabetes (Glasser et al., 2017). Therefore, if a health promotion education plan is developed for tobacco cessation among the youth, such diseases and death can be prevented. Sociogram Tobacco use is common among youth. Most people start behavior during their youth stage. Tobacco use is brought about by several factors such as peer pressure, family members’ behavior such as the use of the products, stress due to low financial conditions, gender, low performance, and living conditions. For an individual to quit tobacco use, these aspects need to be addressed. However, even though the factors that predispose an individual to tobacco use may not be eliminated, the person needs to be educated on coping with them. For example, when one needs to quit the behavior, he or she has to avoid interacting with friends who use the products. Tobacco products do not have the same impact on the health of an individual. For example, e-cigarettes are less harmful compares to chewing and smoking. When using e-cigarettes, it is easy to quit compared to when smoking. Therefore, when it is challenging for an individual to quit smoking directly, he or she can first shift to an e-cigarette (Dutra & Glantz, 2017). Besides, a tobacco user may reduce the amount taken per day until they quit completely. Failure to do so may contribute to the development of diseases and premature death. Potential Learning Needs Most tobacco users do not know the consequences of their behavior. Most of them use the products for fun, to reduce stress, and due to addiction. However, these individuals need to learn the consequences associated with the use of tobacco products. One thing that they need to learn is that tobacco use significantly reduces the lifespan of the user. Research indicates that the life expectancy of an individual who uses tobacco products is less with ten years compared to a non-smoker. The second thing that tobacco users need to learn is that tobacco has no positive effects on an individual’s health or life. Besides, they need to learn that there are several diseases that are associated with tobacco use. Therefore, it is easy to try to quit the behavior rather than developing health problems. Expectations for the Educational Session By the end of the education session, tobacco users need to show their desire to quit tobacco use. They can show the desire to quit by asking questions that show the possibility of quitting and indicating that they are ready to quit. There are several ways in which tobacco users can quit their behavior. One of them involves the use of a Transtheoretical model. This model helps people change their behavior using six steps, which involve preconteplating, contemplating, preparing, acting, maintaining, and terminating (Ta? et al., 2020). Health Promotion Goals According to statistics, approximately 5.6 million tobacco users with less than 18 years tend to lose their lives annually. This number is equivalent to the death of 1 individual in every twelve tobacco users below 17 years (CDC, n.d.). Developing health promotion strategies can significantly save the life of these individuals. Other than those who die from tobacco-related illnesses, others develop life-threatening conditions such as cancer, contributing to their death. Therefore, it is necessary to develop health promotion strategies, such as education and therapy. Based on this argument, the main agreed-upon goals for helping youths from tobacco smoking is to promote their health condition. This can be achieved through education. The youths need to be taught the health effects of tobacco use and how they can be avoided. For example, heavy tobacco use through smoking contributes to lung cancer.
