Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation
Assignment: Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation
As their names imply, the honeyguide bird and the honey badger both share an affinity for honey. Honeyguide birds specialize in finding beehives but struggle to access the honey within. Honey badgers are well-equipped to raid beehives but cannot always find them. However, these two honey-loving species have learned to collaborate on an effective means to meet their objectives. The honeyguide bird guides honey badgers to newly discovered hives. Once the honey badger has ransacked the hive, the honey guide bird safely enters to enjoy the leftover honey.
Much like honeyguide birds and honey badgers, nurses and health professionals from other specialty areas can—and should—collaborate to design effective programs. Nurses bring specialties to the table that make them natural partners to professionals with different specialties. When nurses take the requisite leadership in becoming involved throughout the healthcare system, these partnerships can better design and deliver highly effective programs that meet objectives.
In this Assignment, you will practice this type of leadership by advocating for a healthcare program. Equally as important, you will advocate for a collaborative role of the nurse in the design and implementation of this program. To do this, assume you are preparing to be interviewed by a professional organization/publication regarding your thoughts on the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and reflect on your thinking regarding the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.
Select a healthcare program within your practice and consider the design and implementation of this program.
Reflect on advocacy efforts and the role of the nurse in relation to healthcare program design and implementation.
The Assignment: (2–4 pages)
In a 2- to 4-page paper, create an interview transcript of your responses to the following interview questions:
Tell us about a healthcare program, within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?
Who is your target population?
What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Can you provide examples?
What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?
What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?
Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?

Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation
Rapid changes are defining the 21st century, more so the field of healthcare. Today’s technological advancement, coupled with unlimited data, has led to an increasing need for effective programs and strategies to manage the big data paradigm influencing care delivery today (Sacristán & Dilla, 2015). These developments are changing the healthcare industry leading to an increased focus on population health, individualized care, quality, and value for services delivered.
Nurses are increasingly becoming indispensable in the wake of patient-centered care, as they provide the link between the patients and other healthcare professionals (Klein & Sorra, 1996). The increasing number of deaths and other complications resulting from medical errors made by nurses and physicians when gathering, recording, and analyzing data has led to the need for a more effective, error-free health record program and system
The need to streamline healthcare delivery by increasing safety and value for the care across the healthcare sector has led to automated data handling programs. One of the major programs that healthcare organization has continued to adopt, implement and utilize regarding patient data management is the ‘Electronic Health Record program’. This paper discusses the role of nurses in program design and implementation.
Healthcare Program: Costs and Projected Outcomes
According to Tummers & Bekkers (2013), electronic health records help nurses and doctors personalize medical care and contribute towards patient engagement in care and research. The increasing volume of data for the medical industry is becoming an important trend towards achieving quality-driven and patient-based care models in the healthcare industry.
The health care program is the adoption and implementation of an electronic healthcare record system or program. The program’s primary objective is to improve the quality, value, and continuity of the care given by the nurses and other professionals.
An electronic health record is a program or system that provides a digital way of collecting recording patient data to ensure it is easily accessed when need be. The program will comprise multiple phases or applications, i.e. data analyzing tools and end-user. Regarding cost estimation regarding electronic health record program designing and implementation, US$ 15,000 is proposed on the lower end.
However, this excludes maintenance costs after implementation. More so, the cost may change either way, depending on the size of the healthcare organization. Despite the high implementation cost, multiple outcomes are projected from the program. These include; improved or better healthcare services from the improved aspects of patient care such as communication, efficiency, safety, effectiveness and patient-centered model.
Target Population
The primary target population for this program is nurses and other professional care providers. According to Evans (2016), nurses have become advocates of better care delivery, equity and positive patient outcomes. Regarding the program, the nurses will benefit from an integrated data system, easy access to patient information, consistency, minimal errors, and lesser time is taken and improved care delivery.
Classen et al (2018) identified that improving workplace experience for nurses in healthcare settings increases productivity; hence the program will be an integral tool in supplementing nurses’ work quality and value.
Role of the Nurse in Providing Input for the Design & implementation of the Healthcare Program
Nurses are professionals well trained to assess plans, design as well as implement solutions as healthcare givers. Nurses’ role entails collaborating with other care givers to plan for patient care, operate medical equipment, monitor health records, and record medical details. With reference to designing of the program, nurse plays integral role together with other players in designing the best recording approach and data storage aspect.
As nurses are major users of the program, their input is indispensable; hence helping in designing a program that is user friendly. Nurses collaborate with other professionals and provide insight into how the program ought to be run, what type of data results it gives, and what purpose (Classen et al., 2018)
For example, nurses undertake training determining the overall working of the program. Their input helps in determining how the program ought to be laid down regarding their daily working patients
Nurses and nurse professionals have become integral players in the overall performance of the healthcare industry. One of the unique roles of the nurses regarding designing and program implementation is that they will serve as the change agents who will actively put the new program into use.
They adopt and apply the changes that come with the program. They provide an integral source of feedback regarding program effectiveness as they are the primary direct users; hence their response/feedback will improve the overall program design and performance (Scott et al., 2019). For example, the nurses will actively utilize digital platforms such as tablets into collecting patient data. The nurse will utilize the stored data to retrieve patient information when need be.
In terms of nurses’ role in designing and implementing the program, there is a thin difference as their role in the two aspects overlap. For example, as nurses actively use their program to record patient data, they understand the system functionality, and hence give feedback which is utilized in making relevant modifications and designing better performing upgrades of the system
My Role as an Advocate for the Target Population for the Electronic Health Records Program
An advocate for the nurses (target population) is to ensure the healthcare professionals understand the aspects and impact of electronic healthcare records in their daily operations and quest to deliver quality care.
With the medical industry lagging in technology adoption, as nurse advocates, the focus would be to directly connect nurse operations and subsequent impact on patient care. The focus is to make the caregivers positively adopt the program for a better patient experience.
Members of a Healthcare Team That Are Most Needed to Implement a Program & Why
Implementing the Electronic health records program is expected to draw from the collaborative input of all major players in the healthcare industry; some stakeholders will be needed more for greater and better impact. These include the leadership & management team, departmental heads, nursing team, nursing informatics professionals, physicians, and other industry experts (Scott et al., 2019).
For the management team, they make decisions and finance the program designing and implementation. They will make the final decision whether the program will be adopted or not. Departmental leaders will lead the nurses and other workers into active training, piloting and actual use within the healthcare facility.
Finally, nurses will be integral members in the entire process; in addition to actively participating in implementation, they will give vital feedback regarding the program’s impact and effectiveness.
